Styling a living room may seem overwhelming in comparison to getting dressed in the morning, but when you break it down, it's not as difficult as it seems. At least the way I approach it. Plus, when you live in a 650-square-foot apartment it's not like you've got a lot of space to work with.
But when I was approached to share how I would style a living room around a piece of furniture, I had fun imagining how I would style my teeny cozy living quarters. I realized I approach interior design the same way I do when I style an outfit.
The look begins with a focal point – sometimes that's something new and bold, but typically it's an investment piece–something I know will look great again and again–like this gorgeous white sofa from Modani, a modern furniture store who specializes in contemporary furniture ( and lots of fabulous modern sofas ). Next comes the fun. Color, texture, pattern, quirk – these are the building blocks that take an outfit or a room to the next level. They add the personality and start the conversation. Finally, no look is complete without the finishing touches: the cinch of a belt, some layered necklaces, or a great pair of shoes. Something that pulls the whole look together, like this funky patterned rug.
